Our adult intensive care units (ICU) at Memorial Health System treats a wide variety of critically ill patients, including post-surgery, multi-trauma, neurotrauma, neurosurgical and orthopedic.
To treat critical illnesses, Memorial's ICU staff actively incorporates evidence-based practice, which means our treatments and procedures follow the guidelines prescribed by recent and trusted medical research. This ensures that you are receiving the best possible intensive care.
An extremely successful example of evidence-based practice is Memorial Health System's new Rapid-Response Team. Team members assess patients' conditions to identify those with deteriorating, critical conditions—and intervene to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest. In just one year, this team has reduced the number of heart arrests by 60%.

The Important and Welcomed Role of Family
Our ICUs are a family-centered care facility. Children are allowed to visit any time and family members are welcome to stay overnight in the patient's room. We understand that the family’s involvement is integral to the patient’s well-being.
In addition, ICU nursing staff holds frequent care conferences with family members to provide progress reports, discuss improvements, answer questions, and obtain feedback. This process helps family members actively participate in and support the patient’s recovery process.
More about our ICUs:
- Designation by the state of Colorado as a Level II trauma facility—This designation certifies the staff to treat the vast majority of traumas. Plus, we partner with several hospitals in Denver for when Level I care is needed.
- Active participation in the 100K Lives Campaign to further improve patient care and recovery—Memorial's ICUs are a strong proponent and active participant in this national campaign to improve patient outcomes by using evidence-based practices. Memorial’s new, successful Rapid-Response Team mentioned above was developed as part of the 100K Lives Campaign.
- Use of evidence-based practice to treat sepsis—Sepsis is a dangerous infection in the body. Memorial is the only health care provider in southern Colorado actively entering data and participating at a high level in this voluntary, state-wide collaborative effort to reduce sepsis rates.
