In Memorial’s Surgery Department, You’re in Skilled and Caring Hands

When you or a loved one needs surgery, you may feel anxious and concerned about the procedure. The skilled surgical team at Memorial Health System will help put you at ease.

Throughout your surgical experience, you’re cared for by experienced physicians, nurses and other specialists who work together (cohesively) as a skilled team. Our surgical staff performed nearly 18,000 surgeries in 2006 and currently performs 70 to 80 procedures each day. So you know you’re in experienced, caring hands.

Surgical Services Offers Many Services

Memorial offers a wide range of surgical services, including general surgery and specialized (specialty) procedures such as cardiothoracic, laparoscopic, neurosurgical, gynecological, orthopedic, pediatric, trauma, urological, vascular, and eye, ear, nose and throat procedures.

As a Level II trauma center with 15 operating rooms, Memorial’s surgical team provides 24-hour specialized care and can handle (manage)any emergency.

The Memorial Health System surgical department is consistently recognized as one of the best in the country:

  • According to HealthGrades 2007, Memorial Health System ranks #1 in Colorado for heart care. Our cardiac unit was also recognized for the third year in a row as one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular care.
  • We perform the most open heart surgeries in southern Colorado.
  • The surgical department is a top performer in the state for preventing surgical infection and for implementing measures to improve surgical care.
  • We were the first hospital in the nation to develop an Obstructive Sleep Apnea protocol for surgical patients.

Memorial Hospital recently received a $50,000 grant to serve as a demonstration site for Human Factors Training. This training is tailored to health care professionals who work closely together and focuses on enhancing critical communications that improve patient safety.

As a leader in surgical services, Memorial Hospital has invested in state-of-the-art equipment to reduce the impact of surgery on patients.

  • We use the only image-guided knee arthroplasty in southern Colorado. We are the only facility in southern Colorado that utilizes image-guided knee arthroplasty technology.
  • The Medtronic Stealth navigational system for cranial and spine surgeries helps reduce the invasiveness of your surgery and lowers the risk and operating time while improving your outcome and recovery.

Pre-register for Your Surgery

If you have surgery planned, (contact) inquire with Memorial’s pre-surgical clinic for answers to your questions before you go to the hospital. You can talk to a nurse to find out what to expect on the day of your surgery. The nurse also reviews your health history and complete many of the required tests right at the clinic.
