WHY WOULD I NEED A SLEEP STUDY?

Some symptoms of a sleep disorder can be daytime sleepiness or fatigue, falling asleep during the day at inappropriate times, unrefreshing sleep, waking up gasping for breath and snoring, all which may indicate the need for a sleep study. While there are 81 officially documented sleep disorders, Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome, Inadequate Sleep Hygiene, Narcolepsy, and Insomnia are some of the more common types. A sleep disorder of any kind can affect your health and quality of life. It is estimated more than 70 million people in the U.S. have a sleep disorder, most of whom are unaware of it.

THE SLEEP STUDY

The procedure requires an overnight stay at our facility and is considered an out patient visit by your insurance provider. Upon check in, you are taken to your room (private room, private bath, normal bed, cable TV – set up more like a motel room) where your technician will more fully explain the procedure while they prepare you for the test. Electrodes are attached for data collection - the wires are long enough to let you move around and turn over in bed. You are free to read or watch TV until your normal bedtime. You are monitored throughout the night and can page your technician at any time if there is anything you need. The study typically ends around 6:30 a.m., but we do not wake you at a particular time unless you ask us to.

RESULTS

A final report is ready in 7 to 10 days, at which time a copy is faxed to the referring physician and a copy mailed to the patient. The patient is encouraged to schedule a follow up appointment with the ordering doctor to discuss the findings of the sleep study. If treatment is indicated, those options should be discussed at that time as well.
