Memorial offers southern Colorado’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and its only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The hospital is also unique in providing children’s surgery and child life programs. Outpatient services provided by Memorial include occupational health, radiology, laboratory, surgery, urgent and after hours care, and disease and wellness programs. Community Value: In the spirit of contributing to and fostering a healthy community, Memorial operates a free health information call center staffed by licensed nurses (444-CARE). Additionally, through its HealthLink program, Memorial Health System hosts numerous wellness classes and health screenings, and participates in nearly 100 community events per year. History:For more than a century, Memorial Health System and the health of Colorado Springs have been inseparable. In 1904, when Colorado Springs had only 21,000 people, the Methodist Church established Colorado Conference Deaconess Hospital, the facility that would one day become Memorial Hospital Central. Several years later the founder of Colorado Springs, William J. Palmer, donated land at our present site, 1400 E. Boulder. A new facility opened in 1911 with a new name, Beth-El General Hospital. In 1943, when Colorado Springs had grown to 40,000 people, city leaders recognized the need for a community-owned hospital. They purchased Beth-El for $75,000 and renamed it Memorial to honor those who lost their lives in World War II. Today, the hospital is governed by a board of trustees made up community citizens and leaders who volunteer their time to the board. Contacts:Memorial Health System
